Popigai impact breccia
Popiagi Crater, Taymyr Peninsula, Northern Siberia, Russia.
This hard to find impact breccia is an end cut with a varied mix of clasts in the finer grained ground mass. It is polished to a matte finish.
Popigai Crater (or Popigai Astroblem) is a 100-kilometer (62 mile) -wide impact crater that formed about 35 mya. It is tied for the 4th largest impact crater on Earth (with Manicouagan Crater in Canada). Due to the significant heat and pressure of the impact, graphite in the target rock converted to diamonds, forming the largest diamond deposit on earth.
Weight: 275.2 grams
Measurements: 147 x 97 x 27 mm
