Hello, welcome to Raining Rocks! We are a queer, woman owned small business based in Tucson, AZ; the rock and gem capital of the world! We pride ourselves in offering an eclectic variety of material from all over the globe. We do both online as well as in person sales. We carry meteorites, impactites, minerals (old collection and new finds), fossils, carved, polished and tumbled materials, jewelry, faceted gemstones and rough, lapidary rough, slabs, cabs, and literary material. We are a safe space.
Let us introduce ourselves….
Raining Rocks CEO and founder, Suzanne Morrison, has been in the business of selling rocks since 2014. They gained interest in rocks and minerals as a child on a trip to the Arizona Sonoran Desert Museum, which led them on the path to obtaining a geology and environmental science degree from NAU. Since then, they have worked at the National Park Service, Colossal Cave and at Meteor Crater, participated in gem shows, mined minerals, hunted meteorites, and presented educational programs, among other pursuits and passions.
Suzanne’s obsession with meteorites and impactites began when they found their first meteorite over 25 years ago! They can be seen on two episodes of the TV show Meteorite Men, worked behind the scenes for five TV shows and has conducted countless public speaking events. Their mineral and meteorite photography has been featured on book and magazine covers, as well as in articles, museum displays, websites, and TV shows. They’re a member of the IMCA(#5146).
Ilana Brin, our fabulous acquisition manager, wears many hats at Raining Rocks; including marketing and merchandising, but her passion is for customer service. One of her favorite things is assisting customers in finding the perfect gift for those hard to please people in their lives. Ilana doesn’t specialize in just one thing; although her discerning eye tends to gravitate towards colorful gemmy pieces and she has a strong love for all things quartz and its variations.
Raining Rock’s lapidary specialist, Odie House, has been a rock hound for over 40 years. He has a background in mechanics and can fix just about anything, including lapidary equipment.
Having lived in Arizona for most of his life, he has developed a passion for all things turquoise and is a self-proclaimed “turquoise snob”. He has a vast knowledge of lapidary material types, handling, cutting and polishing which he loves to share with others. If you’ve ever wanted to learn lapidary skills, he’s the person to talk to, he is an excellent educator. (He’s also completely annoyed we’ve included a bio and photo because he hates when any spotlight is on him. ;-) )
Mom (aka Norma) is a Raining Rocks volunteer and principal Pocket Picker who favors Arizona minerals most of all. She joins us in the shop twice a week, sprucing it up and working on projects. She occasionally participates in CRM (Crazy Mom Pricing) sales live feeds on facebook, which are not to be missed! Mom is credited with being the original investor in Raining Rocks, having given Suzanne a small loan to buy their first rock collection back in the day. Raining Rocks is all thanks to her.
Disco and Ruby; shop dogs!
When you come to visit us in person, you will most likely get to meet our Rescue Pup Security Team ( ;-) ) and Principal Distractors. Disco, will be a little cautions and play hard to get, until a snackie treat is presented, then he warms up, but it’s best done on his own time. Ruby is curious about everything. She loves people and is often thrilled to hang out in your lap if you chill in the chairs. Scritches will be demanded.
Meet Onyx, our foster we found, skinny, injured and scared, in a parking lot. She’s been with us while she learns how to live in a home and become the best good girl. She’s been a wonderful shop dog and folks who have come in to the shop have helped her learn that people can be good by showing her so much love. Thanks for your help everyone! It looks like she may have found her forever home! Fingers crossed.
